Old Bexley is DA5, the historic village south of the town on the River Cray, and one of the sixteen conservation areas looked after by Bexley Council. Its houses are nothing like the rest of our round, but the prices match: £339 for a three bed tenancy clean, a through lounge carpet at £61, a double oven at £110, and £186 for a deep clean with two cleaners for three hours.
Every house is different
Further north we can picture a house from the gate, because it will be another interwar semi with a bay and a drive. In the village that stops working. The buildings are older and far more varied, with different floors and windows, boilers in odd places, and usually a room or two added later on. We do not quote a carpet here until we have lifted a corner of it, since carpet laid over old floorboards needs a different machine setting from carpet on concrete. The room prices themselves stay the same.
| What we clean | Price |
|---|---|
| Bedroom | £36 |
| Living room | £43 |
| Through lounge | £61 |
| Stairs, each flight | £41 |
| Rug up to 3 square metres | £35 |
| Rug over 3 square metres | £51 |
Conservation-area windows
The conservation rules keep original windows in place, which looks lovely and takes us longer. Single-glazed sashes mist up every winter, and the mark ends up in the corner of the pane where condensation has dried into the paint. It has to come off by hand. We use a gentle product on painted glazing bars and never a scraper.
Deep cleaning a period house
Two cleaners for three hours (£186) will see to a flat. A village house with picture rails, panelled doors and a fireplace in most rooms usually needs two cleaners for four hours, which is £238, or three cleaners for three hours at £264 when you need the house back by lunch. The extra time goes on detail rather than dirt, because old houses simply have more edges. Our deep cleaning page has the full breakdown.
Damp air by the river
Carpets dry more slowly here than up on the heath, especially close to the Cray. In January we will tell you four hours rather than two, and we mean it. Open a window if the weather allows. Carpet cleaning costs the same as anywhere else, £36 a bedroom and £41 a flight.

Questions we get asked
What postcode is Old Bexley?
DA5. It is a village on the River Cray south of Bexleyheath and one of the borough’s sixteen conservation areas. Blackfen next door is DA15.
Do older houses cost more to clean?
The tenancy bands stay the same, £156 to £425 by bedrooms. An old house with picture rails, deep skirtings and sash windows takes longer than a 1930s semi of the same size, so we start earlier instead of charging more.
Why do carpets take longer to dry here?
The air near the Cray is damper, so water evaporates more slowly than it does on higher ground. In winter with the windows shut, two hours can stretch to four. In summer it is much the same as anywhere else.
Do you clean the old sash windows in the village?
Yes, on the inside, by hand with a gentle product that is kind to painted glazing bars. That is how the winter condensation marks in the corners come off.
